What Electrical Service Do I Need for My Pond or Water Feature?

One common question we hear is: What kind of electrical service will my pond or waterfall need?

For most residential ponds, waterfalls, and water features, a dedicated 20-amp circuit with GFCI protection is typically sufficient. We generally recommend installing a quad electrical outlet within approximately 5–10 feet of the pump or equipment area.

When Should the Electrical Be Installed?

In most cases, we recommend waiting until after the pond or water feature has been installed before completing the final electrical work.

Until the feature is built, it can be difficult to know the ideal location for the pump, filtration equipment, and electrical connection. Waiting allows the outlet to be placed where it is most useful while keeping it discreetly integrated into the landscape.

We Can Make the Electrician’s Job Easier

During construction, our installation team can typically trench and install conduit from the water feature equipment area to a location recommended by your electrician.

Since we’re already excavating and working in the landscape, coordinating the conduit during construction can make the electrician’s job easier and help avoid disturbing the finished landscape later.

The cost of trenching and conduit is typically not included in our standard installation agreement. When needed, we can usually complete this work during construction and adjust your final invoice based on the actual materials and work required. For a typical residential installation, this is often an additional $200–$500, although longer runs or unusual site conditions may cost more.

Your electrician can then complete the circuit, wiring, GFCI protection, outlets, and final connections in accordance with applicable electrical codes.

Planning a New Pond or Waterfall?

Don’t worry about having the electrical work completed before we arrive. For most projects, it makes more sense to establish the exact equipment location during construction and coordinate the electrical installation from there.

Planning a Swim Pond or Larger Custom Ecosystem Recreation Pond?

Larger and more complex water features may have different electrical requirements. For these projects, your designer will work with you during the design process to determine the electrical needs and coordinate the appropriate locations for pumps, filtration, lighting, and other equipment.
