Finding a fish stuck in your pond skimmer can be alarming, but it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Fish may enter a skimmer for several reasons, from not feeling well to simply being curious about their new surroundings.
Here’s what to do if you find a fish trapped in your pond skimmer.
Why Do Fish Get Stuck in Pond Skimmers?
There are several reasons a pond fish might end up in your skimmer. A fish that isn’t feeling well may be too weak to swim away from the current. New fish may also accidentally wander into the skimmer while exploring their unfamiliar environment. Sometimes, a fish simply discovers the skimmer and decides to investigate!
What to Do If You Find a Fish in Your Skimmer
1. Gently remove the fish. Carefully scoop the fish out of the skimmer and return it to the pond.
2. Check the fish for signs of illness or injury. Look for unusual swimming behavior, damaged fins, sores, or other signs that something may be wrong. If the fish appears unwell, investigate possible water quality issues and seek appropriate treatment if needed. Feel free to text Splash photos or videos if you have any concerns! 3. Keep an eye on the fish. Monitor its behavior over the next few days to make sure it is swimming normally and recovering well.
What If the Fish Keeps Getting Stuck?
If the same fish repeatedly enters the skimmer, try temporarily removing the skimmer’s weir door. This is the floating door at the skimmer opening that helps regulate water flow. Removing it allows fish to swim more freely in and out while they figure out that there’s nothing particularly interesting inside!
Important: Remember to reinstall the weir door after a few days. The weir door helps maintain proper water flow, and shutting it gives you access to your pump and filter pads. So don’t lose it!
With a little observation and a simple adjustment, you can help your pond fish stay safe while keeping your filtration system working properly.
